When you have trouble sleeping the search for anything that will make you sleep can take over your life. The interesting thing is, that just the fact of not sleeping well can cause you to sleep even worse, preventing you from finding that elusive cure for insomnia.
When you worry about not falling asleep – this worry makes you anxious and unable to relax. Instead of winding down toward the evening you start thinking about not falling asleep. You just know how you are going to lie awake when you go to bed…
You just know that when you get up in the morning you’ll be beat. You start calculating how little sleep you’ve had lately….
Does this sound familiar?
If it has, you are not alone. Actually, sleep experts say that one of the first casualties of sleeping problems is your ability to relax. And not being able to calm down makes it much more difficult to prepare your body for sleep.
Most of us – well just about all of us – can’t fall asleep like blowing out a candle. Yes, it is true that there are people that find it really easy to fall asleep, not like those that toss and turn for hours…
‘Natural sleepers’ can relax in the evening, to slow down their minds and their bodies, disciplining their thoughts and relaxing their muscles.
But many of us don’t this naturally. We have to practice relaxation. The good news is that this is really easy to learn…
Here are few habits that you should consider establishing:
1. Start getting ready for sleep at least a couple of hours before bedtime – gradually slow everything down, turn down (or off) the lights and the sound on the TV or radio, don’t exercise or do too much physical activity.
2. Take pen and paper and plan your next day. This way you will also “complete your thoughts” on open matters from the day that has just gone by, so later you won’t have to lie awake in bed thinking about all that stuff.
3. Avoid watching TV before sleep, at least don’t watch anything that can be disturbing.
If you give it some thought, I’m sure you could find a few more ways to relax and get yourself ready for sleep.
